Science

Today we chatted about why voice typing is such an important tool when creating meaningful and authentic writing. We went through the process we want you all to go through on future responses in all your classes when writing. Here is an example:

Your Science midterm exam is on Monday. You will access to an audio copy of the exam, and technology to write your answers. The outline is on a blog post below, and in your journal you should have page numbers and key concepts to study over the weekend. Please manage your time well and use good studying strategies to prepare for your test.

Humanities

Wow, we were missing a lot of grade 8's as they were away hiking through Kananaskis (so jealous).

Today we spent time working through the Japanese vocabulary in Chapter 13.  We defined and illustrated the following words:

Shogun
Emperor
Ronin
Tokugawa
Shogunate
Bakuhan System
Feudal System
Hereditary
Daimyo
Samurai
Peasants
Artisans
Merchants
Outcasts
Confucianism

These definitions and illustrations are due tomorrow !

Science Mid-Unit Assessment Monday, Oct 31st

Today we did a huge review of all the concepts learned since September.  Students have an exam outline in their journals and study notes & page numbers to focus on.

Humanities

For homework: 5 of your squares in your lotus diagram page are due and will be marked. All of the photos are posted on a below blog post. Outline the squares that you want us to mark....like this:

We read the story of 47 Ronin today and discussed new vocabulary as well as the beginning of the Edo Japan Hierarchy. You will be continuing with this tomorrow. If you would like, you can re-read the story in the textbook on page 283.

Science Update

Yes, you were fantastic today with your all business Candy is Dandy experiment.  Please finish up your critical thinking responses from Monday...see previous blog post.

We are thinking about a Science Mid Unit assessment on Monday, Oct 31st (day 5 period 1 &2).  We thought it would be the best choice considering studying will be non-existent on Halloween night etc.  Stay tuned for details...we will discuss in class tomorrow.

Remember, it is jammie day tomorrow.

Science

Please finish your Science critical response and have it printed and ready for tomorrow's class. Great job today with our Candy is Dandy lab -- you were all very serious with your experimenting!!

Humanities

Today was predominately spent discussing the election in the United States.  Time was spent reading an article and determining each candidates political platforms.  From there we had an amazing class discussion on what exactly each platform meant, what is the rationale, how can we compare these policies to Canada's.  Great Questions everybody, let's keep reading and following so that we are able to make educated and informed statements.

Tomorrow: we will be continue working on crafting questions based on our 3 statements/observations from Japan's pictures and quotes.

Science

Great job on your Fraction check in today!

Today in Science you completed a critical response based on Solubility. You will have time to work on this tomorrow as well. It is not for homework. However, it would be smart to get your rough copy done so you can get feedback tomorrow.

Here are the sheets if you misplaced/forgot them:

Humanities

Today we were introduced to some primary sources from the Edo Japan time period. You were asked to critically look at these pictures/quotes and write 3 questions or statements from each one in your journal. We asked you to think:

Ø  What is happening in the picture?
Ø  How are people acting/feeling?
Ø  Is the quote telling you to do something/live a certain way?
Ø  What does this image say about the Worldview of Edo Japan?
Ø  Do you have any questions about what is happening in the picture or quote?

Here are the pictures to complete your homework.

Math

Remember that you have a fraction check in on Monday.

You have a recipe card to prepare...you are welcome to put whatever information that you would like to put on both sides of the card.

We ask that you use your printing for the card & not a computer.  Feel free to copy out some of the info found on your foldable or examples...whatever you think will help you on Monday.

Topics on the check in:
-improper fractions to mixed numbers
-adding/subtracting fractions (including mixed numbers)
-multiplying proper fractions (and area models)

Science

On Monday you have a critical question task. This will be your assessment for Solubility. This weekend your homework is to complete questions 1, 4 and 7 on page 26 of the textbook. Here is a picture of the page of the textbook in case you have D2L trouble. Good luck.

Math

Today we completed fraction review. Here are the sheets for your information. Choose the one(s) you are having the most trouble with and complete. It would be a really good idea to choose a few multiplication questions and do area models for them.

Taking/Making Notes

Today, we independently worked on taking jot notes on  a Folklore presentation.  We talked about the importance of reviewing what we are writing to ensure that we are understanding the information and not simply writing things down to get it done.   Some people chose to use a template and others chose to complete it their own way.  For your review, the Presentation is located at

Please start reviewing all of your notes (hint: if you do not have your books at home, all notes can be found on this BLOG) for a multiple choice quiz Friday.

Vivo Field Trip

Grade 8's were handed out field trip forms to Vivo Centre.  This is such an amazing day and an opportunity for the classes to participate in a day of activity.  All expenses have been covered by the PE department and our Parent Council, the field trip is mandatory and apart of the students' PE curriculum.   All paperwork needs to be filled out and returned by Friday.  We will be looking for volunteers so please let us know if you are interested in coming with us.  We would love to have you.
