Humanities

Today we started our Daily Five stations. Everyone did really well for it being the first day. If you are the current event station group from today who did not have their homework done, please finish it tonight. You must have it finished to start the next station tomorrow.

****GROUP ONE: Austin.A, Alyssa, Subhangi, Tahar, Nareg and Somer - you must find a current event tonight to bring to tomorrow's class. ****

Here is the sheet if you missed it. It has also been sent out to group 2!

We also chatted about the Black Death. We will complete our role play tomorrow and view some visuals that describe what really happened. We read up to Case 8 on our role play and made notes in our journal PER CASE that were important when discovering how the plague actually spread. Use these cases to pep up your journals tonight. There should at least be three jot notes for each case.

Humanities

Today was our first day of Daily 5.  We will be starting every class with 20-30 minutes of a different station everyday.  Stations are:

Station 1: Silent Reading
Station 2: Current Events
Station 3: 2-Minute Talk
Station 4: Reading Fluency
Station 5: Reading Comprehension

Whatever is not completed that day during the station time is for homework.  Have a selected current event reading to go prior to that station, it will help to keep you on task and utilize your time more wisely.

The Black Death

We began an official investigation into The Black Death.  After reading eight case studies, we are taking jot notes and documenting evidence that will hopefully lead us to the reason for the fast spread of such a terrible disease.  We will continue this investigation tomorrow.

Math/Science

Today we completed more word problems for unit rates and then did some microscope work. We will be starting percent work on Monday so if you want to get ahead, you could do some percent questions on IXL or Khan Academy.

Great work everyone. Have a great weekend.

Humanities

Today we did some examples of two-minute talks and you did AWESOME. We can't wait to hear the other speeches on Monday!

Next week we are starting our stations. Have your HUM journal ready to go for Monday (organized and everything glued in) so that you can start the stations off properly.

Have a fantastic weekend : )

Math/Sci

Today we went through word problems with unit rates and you all knocked it out of the park. If you are still feeling unsure, I would complete some problems on IXL or Khan Academy to practice.

An example of the challenge word problem today:

"You want to find out how long it will take for you to walk 1.8km. You walk at a speed of 3km/hr. Please write your answer in minutes. "

We also had some fun with microscopes today. We were able to look and discover different magnifications and see some pretty cool slides. Great job following directions.

Humanities

Today we chatted about different roles in the Feudal system. You all wrote excellent notes in your journals and we were both really impressed! You were also given your groups and your novel to start reading for our stations next week. Looking forward to seeing the stations in action : )

If you were absent, please email Ms. Noullett and I will send you the notes to copy down in your journal.

Math/Science

Today we labelled a Microscope directly from the textbook. This information will definitely be on your midterm assessment so keep it safe for review when needed. Here are the sheets if you missed today:

We completed a Math assessment today. If you still think you require extra practice, here is a sheet that can help you with rates/Unit rates. I would review tonight as we are starting a project tomorrow based on "best buys" and using unit rates.

2-Minute Talk

Today was a continuation of our current event on Friday.  We took the Carbon Tax article and jotted our personal opinions and reflections.  After, we had to speak in small groups for 2 minutes regarding our topic.  Please see below for the actual assignment:

TASK # 1. Locate your news article from the previous station.  This can be an online newspaper or a real paper newspaper.
Lastly you need to think about your personal opinion on this story.  You need to also be able to defend how your selected story connects to worldview.
You are to do all of this in preparation for your two minute tell.

What is this?

Well…. In your Daily 5 groups you will each have two minutes approximately to share your article with the team. In this time frame you need to share the big ideas connected to your article. You are allowed to use your notes as a reference BUT DO NOT READ OFF your paper (This is SO boring to listen to!!!).

Know your story well enough that you can easily fill two minutes talking about what it is all about and how it connects to worldviews as you understand it to be. You might also want to share a visual that accompanies your story and this also makes sharing more enjoyable.

Ideas connected to worldview include: values, beliefs, traditions culture, religion, technology, geography, contact with other groups, politics, economics, social systems, ideas and knowledge and government.

Cougar Community

Within each classroom, students discussed the difference between Empathy and Sympathy.  We also watched a short video from one of my favourite people Brene Brown.  Here is the video should you want to watch it again with your families.  It is a great conversation piece for the dinner table.

Humanities

Yesterday we spent the class reading a newspaper article on Alberta's Carbon Tax.  It has definitely sparked debate and conversation within the classroom, which we LOVE!  You were to summarize the article, using the template provided, and get ready for a 2 minute table talk on Monday.  There is a lot to read about this very controversial new tax, try to determine fact from fiction......warning, it is a tough one.

Have a wonderful weekend and stay warm!

Humanities

We have started the Renaissance! Very exciting : )

You have had class time to color and label a map of Europe, and now are completing advantages and disadvantages of living in specific countries. This is due tomorrow.

Tomorrow we will work on your paragraph, answering a specific question and using the PEC paragraph organizer.

Great work so far!

Welcome back!

We can't believe how much you have grown in the past two weeks!! We hope you all had a wonderful break : )

Just for your information:

As of now, there will no longer be notes posted on the blog with what happened in class. We are trying to help you become more independent, and the expectation is that you are taking your own notes in class. If you miss a day, of course we will provide you with notes, but it will not be on the blog. Emailing us, or checking-in the next day, is an excellent strategy. This will really help you to get in this habit for next year, and high school.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask : )
