You will have a quick density calculations quiz tomorrow.  4 questions...show all your work, pay attention to units.  Ensure that you review your practice questions tonight.

Make sure you have a calculator...we will provide you with a density table.

Humanities

Today we finished our speeches. You are presenting tomorrow. Make sure you have communicated with your partner and you are ready to convince our shogun(s)!!!

Science Task Today

Wonderopolis Activity

Read the question and make a prediction:

Why is it easier to lift someone in the water than on land?

Topics this relates to:
-       Buoyancy
-       Density
-       Archimedes

*When making predictions, use these sentence frames:*

-       I predict that…….
-       I know that ……… because…….
-       Because of ……… I think…….

Write your prediction using prior knowledge and concepts we learned in class:

Humanities

Today we went over the Haiku Challenge and voted on our favorite!! Such an awesome time - great work : )

We discussed and started Chapter 14. You were asked to complete some textbook work for Monday. Please ensure you have this done for class as we are starting an assessment next week that you will NEED this information for.

Here is the textbook work in case you have lost it:

Science

Today we chatted about Archimedes' Principle. This is a high level and difficult Science concept. We chatted about overflow, and calculating the volume of irregular objects.

If you want to watch the video we watched in class again here it is:

Finding the Volume of Irregular Objects

We will be doing a lab on Monday to discover more about this principle.

To prepare for your lab, your homework is to complete the following worksheet:

Humanities

Today, we were back to routine and started out with silent reading.  Ms Noullett and I want to remind everybody to put an effort into choosing literature.  Trying to find those books which challenge you and expand your mind.

We also read a great news article http://tweentribune.com/article/tween56/japan-autumn-means-parade-robot-puppets/ that tied nicely into what we have been exploring in our Japan unit.  The role culture plays in Japanese lives.  What influenced it?  Hint hint.....we'll be talking more about this tomorrow.

Finally, we revisited how to write a Haiku.

Remember,
First, think of a topic about nature. Think about the things that you have seen outside. Close your eyes and picture a moment outside and everything around you. Below, write down what you see and hear.

What in nature are you describing? ____________________________

Write down what you ‘see’ and ‘hear’: ____________________________
___________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________

Now, make that shorter choosing less words: _____________________
__________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________

Finally, fit it into three lines with the right amount of syllables:

_______________________________________________ 5 syllables
_______________________________________________ 7 syllables
_______________________________________________ 5 syllables

This was to get us ready to take the 2016 Grade 8 Haiku Championship!

Tomorrow we will vote on our top 5 and submit to the competition.  All to prepare us as we take the

Math

Great work today....we were really impressed with how you turned it around from a not-so-great day yesterday to rocking it out today : )

Please review Math tonight. Your unit exam will be a mixture of multiple choice, modeling, and word problems.

Remember....identify where your trouble areas are and review/do some problems.

Math

After reviewing your Math strips today, you are ALL in need of serious Math review for your unit exam on Wednesday.

Today we went over your check-in then chatted about what you can do to study tonight. Here are your options....

- review your notes
- look at your strips / recent assessments
- identify trouble areas
- do textbook work (pages 198, 204, 210, 216, 222)
- get on IXL or Khan Academy or Math Aids

Good luck studying.

Humanities

Since more than half the class did not finish their homework, we are going to have a re-do tomorrow of our peer editing. Please ensure you are finished your PEC paragraph for tomorrow's class.

Today we combined with 802 and completed four stations. If you did not finish the stations you were at today, finish them tonight. You have another period tomorrow with 802 to finish the last four stations. Great work!

Sorry for the late blog post!!

Today we chatted about worldview and connecting it to the Canadian government as well as comparing and contrasting that with Edo Japan. Here is the video if you want to watch again:

Here are the pictures of the notes we took together:

We then went over a PEC paragraph. This is the grade 8 standard for paragraph writing. P (point) E (Explanation and Evidence) and C (conclusion).

You were given an example paragraph and asked to highlight:

Such an exciting day in 804 today.  WE HAVE A NEW STUDENT!!!!  After putting him on the 'hot seat' (or should I say wobbly stool) and learning all about what the first two weeks in Canada has been like for him, we made it our mission to catch him up on everything we have done since September.  See what each group came up with.

Tomorrow, we are back to comparing Shogunate Japan's Government and Modern Day Canada's Government.  Remember the question: How does Government impact/shape a society's worldview?
